Archer Daniels Midland Co., the $44 billion processor of oilseeds, corn and wheat, based in Decatur, Ill., named Steven Mills executive vice president and CFO. Mills, 52, succeeds Douglas Schmalz, who will retire. Mills joined ADM in 1979 and has served in a variety of senior treasury and accounting roles before being named controller in 1994. He was named vice president in 2000 and group vice president in 2002. Four years later he was named to his most recent role as senior vice president of strategic planning.

Southern Co., the $14.4 billion company, with headquarters based in Atlanta has named W. Paul Bowers executive vice president and CFO. Bowers, 51, replaces Thomas A. Fanning, now the company’s COO. Bowers joined Southern 28 years ago at Gulf Power. Most recently, he served as president of Southern Company Generation, the business unit that manages production, fleet operations, planning, engineering and fuel procurement for Southern’s 280 coal, oil, gas and hydro generating units at 73 plants.
