Onsite clinics and pharmaceutical services are used more often than most other corporate health-related services when available and are the most effective at improving employee health and productivity, according to a survey of 248 large and mid-size companies by Hewitt Associates, a human resources consulting and outsourcing company.

The survey found that while only 19% of companies offered onsite medical clinics and 11% offered onsite pharmacies, 25% of employees used the clinics and 50% used the pharmacies. Satisfaction among companies runs high. A little more than 81% were satisfied with clinic performance; 95% with pharmacy program.

By contrast, 54% of companies offered smoking cessation programs but less than 5% of eligible employees participated in them. Less than half the companies were pleased with the results.

Onsite health services succeed because they are "face-to-face oriented," says Kathleen Mahieu, health and productivity solutions consultant at Hewitt. "It's more engaging when you've got someone there at your fingertips to give you instant feedback."
