William Ruehle, the former CFO of Broadcom, an Irvine, Calif., semiconductor company, warns that executives should be cautious about the e-mails they write, according to the Orange County Register. Ruehle has written a memoir, Mr. Ruehle, You Are a Free Man, about about his experience being charged with illegal backdating stock options, a case that rested in part on one of Ruehle’s e-mails. “Ironically, if you don’t want someone to put something in e-mail, it makes more sense to say so verbally,” he writes. The federal charges against Ruehle were dismissed by a judge in 2009 on the grounds of prosecutorial misconduct.
