European Union countries that have yet to join the euro are starting to shy away from the prospect, CNBC reports. Bulgaria, the EU's poorest nation, said this month that it has frozen plans for adopting the common currency.

Countries that are admitted to the European Union are expected to adopt the euro once they meet certain criteria, and the ability to join the common currency was once seen as an achievement.
