Employees' health problems cost the U.S. economy $576 billion a year, and 39% of that total reflects lost productivity in the workplace, according to the Integrated Benefits Institute. The Institute came up with its estimate using a tool that includes such inputs as wage replacement, medical and pharmacy costs, and lost productivity. In addition to the $227 billion in lost productivity, the total cost includes $117 billion in wage replacement for absences, workers compensation and disability, and $232 billion in medical and pharmacy costs.
