Employees whose companies provide them with paid sick leave are 28% less likely to suffer nonfatal injuries at work than employees without paid sick leave, according to a study by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) reported by Insurance Journal.

The study, based on data about 38,000 working adults, found the biggest impact in industries it characterized as high risk, such as construction, manufacturing, agriculture and healthcare. The authors theorize that paid sick leave might make workplaces safer by discouraging sick employees from coming to work until they are better.
